Crowe’s Nest: Fast Times Book, IFC Zoo Interview & More!

Comments Off

The Crowe’s Nest is a feature that collects random tidbits, etc. in one blog post. So let’s get started!

  • First off, glad you all enjoyed the Say Anything… deleted scenes. Don’t forget that we’ve already posted some Jerry Maguire and Singles deleted scenes.
  • The Bookfinder has released their 100 Most Sought After Out of Print in 2011 and the Fast Times at Ridgemont High book is ranked at #16. As we’ve previously discussed, Cameron owns the rights to the book, but has no plans to re-release the book at this time. Keep looking for a copy at your local thrift store, used book store or at a garage sale!
  • Cameron chats with Matt Singer over at IFC. The first interview focuses on We Bought A Zoo, Matt Damon and the holiday release date. Part 2 revolves around the Say Anything… sequel (that we’ve previously covered) and Part 3 highlights Jónsi, the music of Zoo and future film plans.

Crowe’s Nest: Gossard Cameo, PJ Roots, Vedder, Citizen Dick

Stone Gossard and the “Waiting for the Interurban” statue

The Crowe’s Nest is a feature that collects random tidbits, etc. in one blog post. Today’s edition focuses on PJ related items:

  • Like many other places, Washington State/Seattle is having major financial problems. It doesn’t look like they will be attracting any new film and TV productions anytime soon as they have cut all tax incentives. This article talks about Seattle’s film legacy and includs a great picture (above) of Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard (who was part of Mother Love Bone at the time) on the set of Say Anything… (in a scene that was cut from the final film).
  • The Seattle Times looks back at Pearl Jam’s 20 years with a strong focus on their local roots. There’s some great anecdotes (especially around Eddie Vedder “helping out”), so you’ll want to check it out.
  • The San Diego Union Tribune talks with Eddie Vedder during his recent Ukelele tour. Topics include early influences like Pete Townshend and Neil Young, along with the upcoming PJ20. Here’s what Eddie had to say about looking back:

“I think that, in order to keep progressing, there should be some benefits to looking back, to help you determine what your future course may be. But if they are (there), I don’t think they’ve been tangible for any of us… What we’ve learned is that we really do live in the present. And, to be honest, this looking back thing make me feel like I’m glad we have someone as astute and devoted to music as Cameron Crowe at the helm of putting something together that would represent us and tell a certain number of stories that happened over (the past) 20 years.. So I think we’re just happy we’ve survived it and are still friends and more than that, happy that we’re still a working group.

  • Finally, a great quote about Singles and Citizen Dick by former OK Hotel booker/Gits drummer Steve Moriarty for Mark Yarm’s upcoming book, Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge, which will be released on Sept. 6, 2011.
“I remember seeing fake posters on the poles for a show that the band in [Singles] was supposed to be playing. They’d filmed them, then left the posters up. We were like, ‘Is that show really going on at the OK Hotel? I don’t remember booking that.’ I was like, ‘Who the fuck are Citizen Dick?’”

Inquire Within: Singles Extended Cut or Blu-ray?

Comments Off

Welcome to another edition of Inquire Within… Through your submissions, Cameron will answer your questions in his own words. The goal is to have a new question and answer posting every week or two leading up to the releases of Pearl Jam Twenty and We Bought a Zoo this fall and The Union early next year.

Justin Noszek: Singles is my all time favorite movie.  Will there ever be an extended version released?  Failing that, what about a Blu-ray? It would be a perfect tie in to Pearl Jam Twenty?

Cameron: I’m with you, Justin.  Andy Fischer, who works with me running Vinyl Films, is digging into the vaults at Warner Brothers to see where the footage resides.  We have all the concert footage – including KILLER stuff on Alice in Chains – but the outtake scenes themselves are waiting to be discovered.  Some of Chris Cornell’s unreleased score will be in PJ20 – which is great because he’s a natural scoring artist and did GREAT stuff for the movie that was never used.

Citizen Dick wants a Singles Extended Cut!

Please send in your questions for Cameron and maybe yours will be part of a future installment of Inquire Within…

Singles – Nine Deleted Scenes

Comments Off

More brand new (well 20 years old actually) content for you today. We’d like to share with you nine deleted scenes from 1992’s Singles! These were from Cameron’s script dated January 4, 1991. What I found most interesting when I read the script was how much of it is presented in a different order than the finished film. This speaks to previous comments where Cameron said he was going for Manhattan vignette approach. This made it easy to shuffle scenes around, but still maintain continuity. In addition to the two deleted scenes (Bailey’s French Club Fantasy and Advice to Lovelorn Steve) that can be found on the Singles DVD, we present an animated sequence, Elvis talk, the debut of Mirror Guy #1, a Janet/Dr. Jamison romantic subplot, a Debbie Hunt marathon monologue and much more with Bailey.

Press On!

Comments Off

After many, many hours of reformatting, the Press section of the site is back for your reading pleasure. I just want to make a few things clear before you dig in. The objective here is not to be self-congratulatory in any way. I look at these 200+ interviews with Cameron as a time capsule. What was going on at that time, his thought process making these films, etc. Sure, some of the questions are redundant (What happened with the casting of (insert name)?, pop culture catch phrases and so on…). However, you’ll find many questions that are insightful and if you dig, some great gems that you might not have known.

For example, Cameron was talking about Singles (set in Phoenix) as far back as 1984 or Cameron’s Dad providing ideas/life lessons for the Fast Times book through the guise of Mr. Hand. Those are just a few, there’s many more including the legendary Ricky Fedora… So sit back, relax and explore…

Crowe’s Nest: Singles, Leon Russell, Vinyl Appreciation

Comments Off

The Crowe’s Nest is a  new feature that will collect random tidbits, etc. in one blog post. So without further adieu, let’s get started:

  • Time magazine shares their Top 25 Movie Soundtracks of All Time and Singles has made their list (not sure how Rushmore made the cut over The Royal Tenenbaums). Here’s what they said Singles: In 1992, a year that saw Nirvana outsell U2 and knock Michael Jackson out of the top spot on the Billboard 200, the definitive grunge sound track Singles arrived. Just as Nirvana was the right band at the right time, Singles was the right movie. The film’s score features a virtual checklist of bands from the then exploding Seattle music scene, including Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Mudhoney, and it helped cement grunge as the dominant sound of the decade. (Further bridging art and life, Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell and the members of Pearl Jam made cameos in director Cameron Crowe’s homage to his hometown.) Sure, at its core Singles is a fairly typical movie about 20-somethings dating and mating (occasionally both, often neither), but it’s also a perfect snapshot of grunge’s day in the (black hole) sun.
  • Leon Russell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Great news indeed. The ceremony will air at 8 p.m. March 20 on the cable music channel Fuse. Don’t forget that Cameron’s The Union documentary will open the Tribeca Film Festival on April 20th.
  • Lastly, there’s an interesting article by Philadelphia Inquirer writer Michael Smerconish about digital music, the fidelity inferiority compared to Vinyl and how this generation is missing out on the experience of listening to an album as a whole. There’s some nice personal experiences shared and he even discusses Cameron’s liner notes from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s One More From the Road.

Retro: Singles Flashback!

Comments Off

For our retro bit this week, I stumbled across this great picture which was probably taken on the set of Singles. Front Row – From left to right, Chris Cornell – Soundgarden, Matt Dillon, Cameron Crowe. Back Row – From left to right, Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam) and Layne Staley. (Alice in Chains lead singer who passed away in April 2002). I’m sure we’ll get some great stories about Pearl Jam and their Singles involvement on the upcoming Pearl Jam Twenty documentary.
