Bill Hader and Seth Rogen in Sony Pictures new film, Superbad.

A story I missed from awhile back..Seth Rogen talked with PopMatters during the press for Superbad. He had this to say:

What were your favorite high school movies?

Fast Times at Ridgemont High was the best high school movie ever, but the opening party scene in Say Anything was the most realistic high school party scene ever depicted in the movies.

AOL’s 77 Most Unforgettable Songs

Comments Off

td

Things have been quiet, but we have some tidbits for you today. AOL counts down their “77 Most Unforgettable Movie Songs”. Cameron’s films did extremely well with Say Anything… and Almost Famous both landing in the Top 6! Here’s what they said:

6. Peter Gabriel – “In Your Eyes” – Say Anything… (1989)

You have to respect a man who’s willing to suffer for love — and given how long he held that boombox over his head, John Cusack’s arms must have been killing him. He might have gotten the girl quicker if he’d played ‘Sledgehammer,’ though. — JP

3. Elton John – “Tiny Dancer” – Almost Famous (2000)

Give it up to Cameron Crow for making ‘Tiny Dancer’ the new ‘100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.’ ‘Almost Famous’ was an open love letter to rock ‘n’ roll, and this scene was the little heart over the “i.” — MTC

EW’s Top 50 High School Movies Ever

Comments Off

fasttimes

In the September 15th issue, Entertainment Weekly picks their Top 50 High School Movies Ever and two of Cameron’s films make the grade:

#2. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

When screenwriter Cameron Crowe went undercover to observe the species Teenagerus americanus, he returned with more than the usual grab-bag of anecdotes about horny, apple-pie-humping guys and the popularity-obsessed girls who must fight them off with a stick. He returned with 24-karat truth. To watch Fast Times today is to know exactly what it felt like to be fixated on sex, drugs, and rock & roll in Southern California circa 1982. It also launched careers and dished out still-relevant life lessons: Jennifer Jason Leigh (relax your throat muscles when fellating a carrot), Phoebe Cates (always knock before entering a bathroom), and Judge Reinhold (see above). And Sean Penn’s Jeff Spicoli, with his checkerboard Vans and bong-hit grin, was a geyser of catchphrases (‘’Aloha, Mr. Hand!’’). The film never strains for coming-of-age treacle. Maybe that’s why it still feels so…right. Especially Damone’s sage advice: ‘’When it comes down to making out, whenever possible put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV. – Chris Nashawaty

#11. Say Anything (1989)

Go on: Hoist that boom box above your head and turn up ‘’In Your Eyes.’’ Stand motionless with a fixed expression of unrequited but determined love. And watch Cameron Crowe’s ode to young passion, which made John Cusack the thinking teen’s heartthrob and should have done the same for Ione Skye. If the postgraduation romance between an earnest kickboxer and a sheltered valedictorian doesn’t win you over, repeat steps one and two and listen closer. — Hannah Tucker

We Have The Records/We Have The Proof

I’m very pleased to introduce a new feature to the site today. A series of essays discussing the impact of Cameron’s films and what they mean to you, the readers. These will all be your submissions, so I encourage you to share your thoughts. First up, site reader Dan Pulliam’s ode to “In Your Eyes” and Say Anything… This is a very personal and heartfelt story and I appreciate Dan’s contribution to the site.

“In Your Eyes” by Dan Pulliam

“Accepting all I’ve done and said, I want to stand and stare again ’til there’s nothing left out.  Oh, it remains there in your eyes.  Whatever comes and goes, I will hear your silent call.  And I will touch this tender wall ’til I know I’m home again.”

For the uninitiated, that’s how Peter Gabriel’s ‘In Your Eyes’ was always meant to start.  Ironically, those words get right to the heart of the song in ways that the released version never did.  And with that in mind, I’ve decided to take the bull by the metaphorical horns with this first article and get right to the heart of Crowe.  To go beyond the face value of a more conventional critique and look at what make Crowe’s films so great: individual moments.  In what just may be the most ‘almost famous’ of these, I’m starting today with the boombox scene.
