Many of you have asked about the deleted scenes from Elizabethtown, so we thought it would be a nice holiday/new year treat to share them with you over the next week or so. We will be adding a new, deleted scene each day. These are all from the March, 2003 draft of the script. We hope you like them.
We are back with another edition of Inquire Within… Through your submissions, Cameron will answer your questions in his own words. The goal is to have a new question and answer posting every week or two leading up to the releases of Pearl Jam Twenty and We Bought a Zoo this fall and The Union early next year.
Rodrigo Rothchild (Austin, Tx): How do you feel about Kirsten Dunst’s character in Elizabethtown being the source of the term ‘Manic Pixie Dream Girl’? (Greg’s note: this phrase coined by film writer Nathan Rabin, has become part of the pop culture vernacular over the last few years. more details can be found here)
Cameron: I dig it. I keep thinking I’ll run into Nathan Rabin and we’ll have a great conversation about it. Every MPDG he’s assigned to me has been based on a real woman, though, so they’re not really “cinematic creations” to me. Often that persona is a front, and every true man’s job is to dig beneath the surface and really come to know the woman he finds himself in love with. Still, the coinage is hilarious. I love it.

The cast and crew have been very busy filming in Louisville and Elizabethtown. Here’s various pictures that have surfaced on the Internet or been sent directly to me by site readers. Thanks to everyone who has shared these.

This appears to be the name of Cameron’s new film according to a few published reports that have recently surfaced. The Hollywood Reporter states that Kirsten Dunst is in talks with Crowe for the female lead (after dropping out of M. Night Shyamalan’s next film The Woods). In another recent AP interview, Nancy Wilson (who will score the film) described it as ‘Jerry Maguire’ meets ‘Say Anything’ meets ‘© at Ridgemont High’ and the best work Cameron’s ever done. She also states that the leads are about twenty five years old (which seems to jive with the potential casting of Kirsten Dunst).
No male leads have been mentioned as of yet, but I’d love to see that long promised collaboration with Johnny Depp (who looks younger than his age) or maybe Orlando Bloom? Anyway, it’s great to hear some news about the film. Patience will be important, as the earliest principal photography will begin is late this year or early next year. Distribution is still up in the air, but my best guess is DreamWorks or Paramount. Things can and probably will change, so stay tuned for the latest.
