American Hot Wax: Cameron Becomes the Story

Comments Off

We’ve got a new Rolling Stone article to share with you today. Cameron visited the set of the 1978 film, American Hot Wax, a film that chronicles Alan Freed (an influential DJ)  and the early days of rock ‘n roll. What’s interesting is that he was asked to portray a delivery boy and he shares the process with the readers. Ultimately his lines and most of his scene was cut from the film, but you can kind of see him (wearing the paper hat) during the “Come and Go With Me” studio sequence (34:00 minute mark).

Incidentally, American Hot Wax has never been released on DVD and is extremely collectable on VHS. However, you can watch the film over on Myspace.

It’s True! Cameron Directs Pearl Jam!

Comments Off

theshowbox

Yes. The rumors are true. Cameron directed a Pearl Jam video/commercial this Thursday in Seattle (at the legendary Showbox). It also looks like a 20th anniversary documentary of the band is in the works with Crowe at the helm. Kelly Curtis, Pearl Jam’s manager, provides the details in this interview with Billboard. Here’s a few exciting quotes:

Curtis said that the Target commercial was only one reason for the Showbox session; with singer Eddie Vedder on tour supporting his solo work for the next month, “we had a narrow window to get some footage,” says Curtis. “We shot three or four songs that night.” Curtis said that some of the footage may be used for a project that Cameron Crowe is working on in connection to the band’s 20th anniversary.

Cameron’s Journal for Elizabethtown

Comments Off

etowncrowebloom

Here’s the first entry for Cameron’s Elizabethtown Journal.

December, 2003

Elizabethtown finally has its lead actors. Orlando Bloom (as Drew Baylor) and Kirsten Dunst (as Claire Colburn). Dunst had come very close to being cast in Almost Famous and Bloom had been the lead (with Kate Beckinsale) in my one and only commercial, a black and white ad for the Gap. We’d made a pact to work together in the future. Now’s the time. Only one problem. He’s not available for close to six months. Dunst will have time to make another movie, “Wimbledon,” in England, and I will have time to storyboard and prepare the movie to a fine degree. And the movie, which is set in summer, will be able to be shot in summer. That had always been a problem  how were we going to do a movie about summer, in all its glorious humidity, with January snow on the ground? It feels right to wait. Vinyl Films will go into a long pre-production hibernation_ we make all kinds of plans on how to spend the down time. We’ll work on future projects, plot visual style on “E-town,” plan music for the movie and we’ll put out the vinyl on our fave artists Low and Mark Kozelek, and wait out the long months.

petsounds

Cameron was among the 273 voters for Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time (this special issue is on newsstands now!). Crowe’s #1 selection was the Beach Boys album Pet Sounds. He wrote this about that seminal album. I’m trying to get all 50 of Cameron’s picks, so stay tuned….
