Almost Famous UK Blu-ray

Comments Off

famouukblufront

I was very excited to see the UK release (Sony Pictures) of Almost Famous arrive in my mailbox today! I thought I would provide a report as I know many of you are interested.

The BD is all regions. So it will play on all U.S. machines. This is the “Untitled” version. The picture quality is stunning. It’s a certainly a significant step up from standard DVD. Your HDTV will be smiling!!!

Audio quality is also great. The BD includes True HD 5.1

Extras are slim, but this may be a rights issue overseas. The BD includes the Lester Bangs interview and B-sides (now titled “Love Comes and Goes”) from the Bootleg Cut DVD. No other extras are included (except for trailers from Across the Universe and Close Encounters of the Third Kind).

Now that the format war is all but over (Best Buy, Netflix and WalMart all announced they would only support Blu-ray in the coming months), I’m hopeful will see more of Cameron’s films on Blu-ray soon….but this will definitely hold me over until then!!!!!!

High Def Format War Update

Comments Off

fthddvd

I’m sure that many of you are following the High Definition Format War (HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray). They boast superior picture (1080p), sound (Loseless audio) and extra features. So far, this has only been relevant to a small number of movie watchers (early adopters/film buffs with HDTVs). These early adopters have picked sides and it’s been pretty ugly at times for something so silly. The big Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is coming up next week, so hopefully everyone can play nice (or studios will change sides, declare exclusivity, etc.) and we can finally get one format.

Anyways, I wanted to provide you an update on which of Cameron’s films are available on the next gen DVD format(s).

Fast Times is available on the HD-DVD format (since Universal is currently HD-DVD exclusive).

I’m most excited about Almost Famous (which was recently announced in the UK, Germany and Japan for Blu-Ray). It seems that all three versions overseas will get the Bootleg Cut. It’s very confusing as Paramount/DreamWorks owns the rights in the U.S. (which means HD-DVD only), but Sony holds the rights in most other countries (which means Blu-Ray). Also, Japan and the USA are in the same region, so if you have a U.S. Blu-Ray player, it will play the Japanese Blu-Ray! It also seems that UK release will be “all regions” and will also play on a U.S. Blu-Ray player.

Jerry Maguire has been rumored for Blu-Ray (Sony/Columbia is Blu-Ray exclusive) in the U.S. for quite some time (hopefully with all the extras from the 2 DVD set), but no formal announcements have been made. No word on Singles (Warner – which currently releases for both formats), Vanilla Sky and Elizabethtown (both Paramount owned and currently HD-DVD only)…stay tuned for all the latest news on this evolving soap opera

AOL’s 77 Most Unforgettable Songs

Comments Off

td

Things have been quiet, but we have some tidbits for you today. AOL counts down their “77 Most Unforgettable Movie Songs”. Cameron’s films did extremely well with Say Anything… and Almost Famous both landing in the Top 6! Here’s what they said:

6. Peter Gabriel – “In Your Eyes” – Say Anything… (1989)

You have to respect a man who’s willing to suffer for love — and given how long he held that boombox over his head, John Cusack’s arms must have been killing him. He might have gotten the girl quicker if he’d played ‘Sledgehammer,’ though. — JP

3. Elton John – “Tiny Dancer” – Almost Famous (2000)

Give it up to Cameron Crow for making ‘Tiny Dancer’ the new ‘100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.’ ‘Almost Famous’ was an open love letter to rock ‘n’ roll, and this scene was the little heart over the “i.” — MTC

Crowe Sees Red

Comments Off

reddog

I’m sure you remember Red Dog from Almost Famous? The legendary Allman Brothers Band roadie released a book back in 2001 (A Book of Tails) about his life on the road. Here’s what Cameron had to say about it:

“I’ll admit it right now. I am a big fan of Red Dog, and have been even before he allowed me to interview him back in 1973 for a story in Rolling Stone. Hell, he was already legendary back then. But now I just have to say that I am extremely jealous of the Great Dog, because I’ve just finished reading “A Book of Tails.” True rock, the kind that lasts forever, is about honesty and humor and love and chasing the elusive buzz of greatness.

Red Dog’s book captures all this and more. You can’t put this thing down, and best of all, it makes you want to listen to music. Not just the Brothers, but all music. Red Dog really caught something with his writing. This book, and a copy of “Live at Fillmore East” belong in the time capsule reading — Kick back and see what you missed. Two centuries from now I doubt anybody will have said it better. As you can tell, I’m still a fan.

Love you Dog.

Best,

Cameron Crowe

What Does An Associate Producer Do Anyway?

Comments Off

scott_title

There’s a wonderfully informative interview with Vinyl Films’ Scott Martin over at The Living Jarboe. He talks about job responsibilities as Associate Producer, his integral role in relation to music for the film (and during the shoot) and his involvement with the DVD’s. It’s a fascinating piece, so please give it a look.  The entire interview is available below:

On a January 2001 day that began at dawn and ended long after the sun had gone down, I was an invited guest on the set of Vanilla Sky at Paramount Studios. There, I had the fascinating experience of participating in the filming of a “party scene” which included three of the stars of the movie. I also had the distinct privilege of observing director Cameron Crowe as well as Scott Martin in his professional duties as associate producer.

JARBOE : How long have you worked in film production in Hollywood?

SCOTT MARTIN: I’ve been working in film or television since 1993, initially as a production assistant, then as an executive assistant and finally as an associate producer for Cameron Crowe, with whom I continue to work.

JARBOE : Tell me about your work for the film, Vanilla Sky. You are credited as Associate Producer. What does this entail?

SCOTT : This is a question I get asked constantly, “What the hell do you actually do?” People, especially my family, get very upset that I have a hard time defining it at any given time. I work with Cameron Crowe, who writes, directs and produces. My job is to assist him in any and every way I can. Something very tangible I produced last year was a DVD called Untitled. We were working on Vanilla Sky at the same time and Cameron had hardly any time to devote to the creation of the DVD, unless it directly involved his creative input, such as the audio commentary. So I took on the responsibility of shepherding that while he focused on the movie at hand. At the same time, I was helping Cameron with casting decisions, editorial decisions and day to day production problems, depending where we were in the process. Cameron has final cut and final say in every single decision regarding the movie, but he uses me as a sounding board to help work through problems. We have now done Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, and Vanilla Sky together, so I feel like I can contribute an opinion that honors his directing style and is best for the film. Also, I bring a lot of music into the fold. We play music on the set, during takes or between takes to help motivate the actors, or establish a mood. Cameron and I collaborate on that. We have very different tastes in music, so we are able to cover a lot of ground. He used to tour with Zeppelin and The Who and I used to skate to Swans records and Bowie’s Low. It’s an interesting musical partnership that has, sort of, organically developed between the two of us. That’s why we can have a soundtrack like Vanilla Sky that contains artists from Sigur Ros to Rundgren to Leftfield.
