I talked to Cameron Crowe briefly tonight. Here’s what he had to say about the new Almost Famous Director’s Cut 2 DVD Set set for later this year.

  • It will be called Untitled: The Bootleg Cut and have key artwork that will look like a bootleg record.
  • It will have both versions of the film.
  • A Stillwater CD will also be included!
  • He said there weren’t plans for the Rolling Stone articles, but when I said that people wanted them, he would include them!
  • Tons of Stillwater Footage (at Rock School learning to play) and the complete footage of all the Stillwater songs in concert.
  • He said the DVD will be really cool and it’s for the fans….

Alejandro Amenabar’s 1997 film Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) starring Penelope Cruz is scheduled to be released on DVD next week (August 21st) by Artisan Entertainment. As you know by now, it’s the basis for Vanilla Sky, although it’s not known if it’s a straight remake or if Cameron has added some “twists and turns”. You can place your order for the DVD above.

It seems that the release date for Vanilla Sky is set for December 14, 2001. This had been previously mentioned a few months back (after mid-October had been the first date). Entertainment Weekly and Variety recently ran stories about the Fall releases and confirmed the December date.

The latest issue of Spin Magazine celebrates 10 years of Seattle band Pearl Jam. There are many recollections from everyone in the “Pearl Jam Family” including Cameron and Nancy Wilson. Cameron’s bits can be read here, but here’s my favorite:

“Pearl Jam would get together in a circle before they went onstage and Eddie pulled me into the circle before one of their Lollapalooza shows. I put that in [my 2000 film] Almost Famous, even though it actually happened 20 years later.”

As promised, I’ve added Cameron’s extensive interview with Tom Cruise from the June 2000 Vanity Fair. They discuss Cruise’s entire career and there’s even a description of Cruise reading the Lester Bangs part, so Cameron could hear it aloud. It’s a great interview, so check it out.

Homegrown II Liner Notes

I’ve just finished transcribing Cameron’s liner notes for the Homegrown II album. What’s this, you ask? It’s a 1974 benefit album sponsored by KGB FM & AM radio in San Diego to support the United Way. Cameron was already established with Rolling Stone and since he was born and raised in the area, he was the logical choice to do the liner notes. Enjoy!

Cameron is quoted in Entertainment Weekly‘s annual “It” issue which is on newsstands now. He talks about who’s on his it list:

“PJ Harvey’s “66 Promises,” included only on her “Good Fortune” (Pt. 1) single from the Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea CD; Polly Jean is quietly having one of her greatest years yet. And Noah Taylor (Tomb Raider), the best-kept secret in movies.”
