“From 10-minute, three-guitar jams, to heartbreaking acoustic ballads, April shines with the most evocative music of Kozelek’s career.”- Jonathan Cohen, Billboard

“Mark Kozelek returns with an album of rare warmth and immediacy, where intensely personal lyrics hang on hazily magnificent melodies.”- Aidin Vaziri, San Francisco Chronicle

“April”, the new album from Sun Kil Moon, is Mark Kozelek’s first original record since the acclaimed 2003 Sun Kil Moon debut “Ghosts Of The Great Highway”.

11 songs at almost 74 minutes, “April” is a collection of songs recorded between March and August 2007 in San Francisco (Hyde Street Studios) and Seattle (Well Recording). In the spirit of Sun Kil Moon’s “Ghosts” and “Tiny Cities”, Mark was joined by the same players as before, including drummer Anthony Koutsos (Red House Painters), bassist Geoff Stanfield (Black Lab), violist Michi Aceret, and percussionist David Revelli. “April” also finds Mark in the company of guest vocalists Bonnie Prince Billy, Ben Gibbard, and Eric Pollard (Retribution Gospel Choir).

Almost Famous UK Blu-ray

I was very excited to see the UK release (Sony Pictures) of Almost Famous arrive in my mailbox today! I thought I would provide a report as I know many of you are interested.

The BD is all regions. So it will play on all U.S. machines. This is the “Untitled” version. The picture quality is stunning. It’s a certainly a significant step up from standard DVD. Your HDTV will be smiling!!!

Audio quality is also great. The BD includes True HD 5.1

Extras are slim, but this may be a rights issue overseas. The BD includes the Lester Bangs interview and B-sides (now titled “Love Comes and Goes”) from the Bootleg Cut DVD. No other extras are included (except for trailers from Across the Universe and Close Encounters of the Third Kind).

Now that the format war is all but over (Best Buy, Netflix and WalMart all announced they would only support Blu-ray in the coming months), I’m hopeful will see more of Cameron’s films on Blu-ray soon….but this will definitely hold me over until then!!!!!!

Bill Hader and Seth Rogen in Sony Pictures new film, Superbad.

A story I missed from awhile back..Seth Rogen talked with PopMatters during the press for Superbad. He had this to say:

What were your favorite high school movies?

Fast Times at Ridgemont High was the best high school movie ever, but the opening party scene in Say Anything was the most realistic high school party scene ever depicted in the movies.

Vinyl Films Records Goes Into The Wild

Monkeywrench/Vinyl Films Records is proud to release the limited edition vinyl version of the soundtrack to the film adaptation of Jon Krakauer’s best-selling book, Into the Wild on January 15, 2008.

“I had structured my screenplay dependant on song accompaniment to both visceral and storytelling components,” says Into the Wild writer and director Sean Penn. “It was during the shooting of the film that Eddie Vedder’s voice as singer and songwriter came to mind as the right voice for this movie. Within a month of his accepting the request, these great and moving songs poured out of him. No other voice flows, bleeds, or rejoices the young American’s land and heart so passionately as Vedder’s. His contribution not only raises the impact of the film considerably, but I believe will be an indelible collection independently. Put it in the time capsule under ‘Road companions’”.

Eddie Vedder’s Music for the Motion Picture Into the Wild was initially released digitally and in compact disc format on September 18 — debuting at #2 on the Billboard Soundtrack chart and #11 on the Billboard Top 200 and to many accolades. The vinyl version includes an exclusive, extended version of the album track “The Wolf”, a bonus 7” single with both studio and live versions of the track “No More”, a 28-page full color booklet with lyrics, and exclusive liner notes by Director Sean Penn. Extremely limited copies will be available at retail outlets on January 29th, 2008.

High Def Format War Update

fthddvd

I’m sure that many of you are following the High Definition Format War (HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray). They boast superior picture (1080p), sound (Loseless audio) and extra features. So far, this has only been relevant to a small number of movie watchers (early adopters/film buffs with HDTVs). These early adopters have picked sides and it’s been pretty ugly at times for something so silly. The big Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is coming up next week, so hopefully everyone can play nice (or studios will change sides, declare exclusivity, etc.) and we can finally get one format.

Anyways, I wanted to provide you an update on which of Cameron’s films are available on the next gen DVD format(s).

Fast Times is available on the HD-DVD format (since Universal is currently HD-DVD exclusive).

I’m most excited about Almost Famous (which was recently announced in the UK, Germany and Japan for Blu-Ray). It seems that all three versions overseas will get the Bootleg Cut. It’s very confusing as Paramount/DreamWorks owns the rights in the U.S. (which means HD-DVD only), but Sony holds the rights in most other countries (which means Blu-Ray). Also, Japan and the USA are in the same region, so if you have a U.S. Blu-Ray player, it will play the Japanese Blu-Ray! It also seems that UK release will be “all regions” and will also play on a U.S. Blu-Ray player.

Jerry Maguire has been rumored for Blu-Ray (Sony/Columbia is Blu-Ray exclusive) in the U.S. for quite some time (hopefully with all the extras from the 2 DVD set), but no formal announcements have been made. No word on Singles (Warner – which currently releases for both formats), Vanilla Sky and Elizabethtown (both Paramount owned and currently HD-DVD only)…stay tuned for all the latest news on this evolving soap opera
