David Crosby: Remember My Name

Logline:
David Crosby reflects on his life of music stardom, while forging new oaths to relevancy at his age of 77 in this deeply personal documentary.

Synopsis:
A revealing and deeply personal documentary exploring the life and creative renaissance of music icon David Crosby. A cultural force for over fifty years, Crosby faced uncertain future after the 2015 dissolution of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Racked with health issues and personal obstacles, Crosby forged a new path at the age of 77. Seeking out younger musicians and recording a pair of critically-praised new albums, Crosby now sets out to make a mark in a world now so different from the generation he came to define in the 60’s. With unflinching honesty, self-examination, regret, fear, exuberance and an unshakable belief in family and the transformative nature of music, Crosby shares his often-challenging journey with humor and bite. You thought you knew him. Meet David Crosby now in this portrait of a man still tilting against every windmill, with everything but an easy retirement on his mind. This inspirational story, filled with music, will speak to loyal fans, and legions of new ones.

The Team

A.J. Eaton, Director:
Born in Idaho, A.J. Eaton is a filmmaker with a unique background in narrative, documentary, and music production. He fell in love with the marriage of music and moving image after watching his folk musician father write a song for a PBS documentary. Later, Eaton earned a degree in political science and became interested in stories of activism and democracy, working on a number of progressive political campaigns. David Crosby: Remember My Name is his first feature documentary.

Cameron Crowe, Producer:
Award-winning writer and director Cameron Crowe credits include such films as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Say Anything…, Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky. His documentary work includes Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers Beach Party, The Union, a making of the Elton John-Leon Russell record of the same name and Pearl Jam Twenty, the acclaimed career-spanning documentary chronicling the birth, rise and remarkable survival of one of America’s greatest rock bands.

Michele Farinola, Producer:
Michele Farinola has been working in documentary features and television for over twenty years. She is currently the executive producer at PCH Films, overseeing production and operations. Prior to that, she served as Co-Head of Documentary Features at Spitfire Pictures, a unit of Exclusive Media, where she was an executive producer of the 2012 Academy Award winning documentary, Undefeated released by The Weinstein Company and the 2012 Grammy Award winning documentary, Foo Fighters: Back and Forth. In addition, Michele was the executive in charge of production of HBO’s 2012 Emmy winning documentary, George Harrison: Living in the Material, directed by Martin Scorsese; and The Last Play at Shea, released by Lionsgate and Showtime.

Greg Mariotti, Producer:
Greg Mariotti has been working with Cameron Crowe’s production company Vinyl Films since 2016. His most recent projects include Showtime’s Roadies and the Jerry Maguire 20th Anniversary Bly-ray and DVD. Prior to joining Vinyl Films, Greg had a prominent career at some of the leading financial institutions in Seattle, Washington.

Director’s Statement

When I was invited to a David Crosby recording session in 2011, I had no idea what to expect. Although I was somewhat familiar with the music of Crosby, Stills & Nash and knew of his past struggles with drug addiction, I admittedly was not a huge fan. Having been around musicians my entire life, I’d encountered a few who probably should have hung up their guitar long ago and not try to top their rock stay heydays. But, as soon as I set foot inside that studio, I realized this wasn’t the case with David Crosby.

There was this lucid, curious and boisterous mustached man in his 70s thriving in his element—trying new guitar tunings, writing and recording what was his first solo album in twenty years undaunted a group of younger new collaborators. As I listened to these surprisingly complex and sorrowful songs take shape, I couldn’t help asking myself where this reawakening is coming from?

I offered to make a short film, perhaps for posterity, that he could use to market his new album. The moment I sat Croz down to talk on camera, I knew that a more immersive, deeper story—far beyond that of a short film—about an enigmatic, paradoxical person haunted by a remarkable past that is astonishingly alive and is still making music needed to be told.

I convinced Croz to let me make a documentary about him and embarked on what would become a seven-year journey filled with many twists and turns. The result is a film that I hope will challenge standard conventions, just like David Crosby himself, to become a story about more than just a person who is a musician, but ideas of harmony, friendship, hope and regret and asks who we all are when the lights have gone out.
